New details emerge for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, currently testing in Stuttgart. Though no identifiable Mercedes stars or model designations are seen, there’s no mistaking this roadster.
The 2012 edition, a three year undertaking, pays close attention to bodyshell rigidity, driving dynamics, the soft top and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness). Gone are the gullwing doors and fixed roofs. In their place, side skirts are more prominent, contributing to better crash performance and driving dynamics. The three-fabric soft top has been endurance tested and optimized to provide superior acoustics and protection. Tests include the hose test, spraying all soft top, doors and flap seals with a water-hose, the continuous overnight rain test, the fording test, the icing, swirl and high-pressure tests, and a final session in an automatic car wash. The rain test simulates every conceivable situation that can occur on any continent.
And the powertrain? That would be a 6.2 liter V-8, 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque and an electronically limited 197 mph is noted. Expected sticker price will be $250,000. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster premieres in September 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
