The first time Black Flag tickled my ears, I was at a friend’s house and wandered into his brother’s room. On top of the dresser was a cassette tape with those four familiar black bars. “Can I listen to this?” I asked. Sure came the answer. And that began a lifelong admiration for Henry Rollins. And weightlifting.
He’s still railing against all that’s phony and professing his love for jazz and John Coltrane. Back in 1986, he was just 25 years old, but already a grizzled veteran of the punk scene. And unfortunately, on what was to be the last tour with Black Flag. Director Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke), releases to the internet, the never-before-seen, Reality 86’d, a road documentary of those last days. Following the band for 6 months in a van, the film features live performances of these legends. More than anything though, it captures a unique period in time for the true punk fan. So, put down the baby to sleep and then watch Reality 86’d .
