To whet our appetite and hold us over until 2012’s The Hobbit, Warner Home Video has organized a three week re-release of The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition films. Over 500 theaters across the US will show The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on June 14; The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on June 21; and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on June 28. Each Extended Edition feature will include an hour of additional footage personally selected by director Peter Jackson. Preceding each feature will be a new and personal introduction by Jackson on the set of The Hobbit.
The special event culminates with the release of The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition on Blu-ray on June 28. The set includes 15 discs of the Extended Edition, featuring the requisite commentaries, behind the scenes and “making of” featurettes.
Beyond the extras though, the extended editions include additional footage that aren’t just randomly deleted scenes. The additional footage permits more time to flesh out stories and plot lines, enhancing not just the deleted scenes but those seen in the theater release.
